Next we went down to Huacachina outside Ica, a tiny oasis town surrounded by huge sand dunes, that's featured on the back of the 50 Neuvo Sol note. These days it's a real backpacker spot, where gringos are attracted by the lure of sand-boarding and dune buggies, but it used to be a glamorous holiday destination for the Peruvian elite, and you can imagine that it must have been really classy and exotic back in the day. It was a good overnight stop off for us, the desert views were amazing and we got a bit of exercise as we decided to climb up one of the dunes behind the town. It is so difficult to climb a steep sand dune, we nearly didn't make it, it's hard to get a sense of how steep the dunes were in the photos, and how strenuous it is to climb up when your foot sinks in with every step and the sand ahead of you starts sliding down!
Pisco sours...
Our lovely hostel shower...
Out in the paddle boats, with the locals...
There are loads of perfectly ripe avocados on the menu in Peru at the moment, here's a 'palta rellena', avocado stuffed with potato salad and the local brew.
